Come See La Mission with the CLF June 4th!

La MISSION pays homage to the neighborhood and people we grew up around, and captures the vibrancy, cultural pride, flavor and sound of this ever-evolving barrio. At the center of the story is Che, an old school reformed bad boy and single father who has dedicated his life to raising his 18 year-old son. Jess is a UCLA-bound honors student who is hiding a deeply-held secret from his macho father: he's gay.

La MISSION doesn't pull any punches. It takes a hard look at some of the prevailing attitudes that still thrive and do damage within our communities. But La MISSION also celebrates the humor, the sense of pride, and the passion for life that exists alongside the everyday struggles.

The CLF will be hosting a Q&A with actor Benjamin Bratt, which will be followed by the film at 8 p.m., June 4th at the Tamarac Square Cinemas, 7777 E. Hampden Avenue Denver, CO. 80231.

Please visit: http://www.regencymovies.com/movieRunDetail.php?movieRunId=9715&movieId=2111&theaterId=10 to purchase your tickets.

Please check the film's website at www.lamissionthemovie.com, and also become a fan of La Mission on Facebook. There you will find details on what cities and theaters we are playing in, plus photos and information on the film and its crew.

CLF Calls on Arizona Gov to Repeal Decision

Below is a letter from the Colorado Latino Forum addressed to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to show our outrage over SB1070.

The CLF has also joined several other organizations throughout Colorado to stand united as we work to fight this unconstitutional, and racist law.

SB 1070 makes it a misdemeanor to lack proper immigration paperwork in Arizona. It also requires police officers, if they form a “reasonable suspicion” that someone is an undocumented immigrant, to determine the person’s immigration status.

Dear Governor Brewer:

We are writing to condemn Senate Bill 1070, the so-called "Safe Neighborhoods" bill. The legislation will harm Arizona communities and is no substitute for real, comprehensive immigration reform.

It will lead to rampant racial profiling by forcing law enforcement officers to demand that legal residents and U.S. citizens "show their papers" solely because of the way they look or speak. It will also redirect law enforcement priorities away from serious criminals in order to fuel this overzealous drive to apprehend undocumented men, women and children.

This bill will push undocumented immigrants deeper into the shadows, and make our communities less safe as victims and community members become more unwilling to report crime. Today, too many Arizonans are afraid to call 911 because of the tactics of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and others. S.B. 1070 would make that problem worse.

Already, law enforcement groups such as the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police have raised serious concerns about the damage this bill will do to community policing and their relationships with members of the community.

Please do what’s right for Arizona. Repeal S.B. 1070 and demand prompt action from the federal government to pass comprehensive immigration reform now.

COLORADO - Members of the Informed Consent Search Coalition will address media in celebration of the passage of HB 1201, which will direct law enforcement officers to advise someone of their constitutional right to decline a voluntary consent search. The following is a statement from Art Way, coordinator of the Informed Consent Search Coalition:

"It is encouraging to see Colorado strike the proper balance between constitutional integrity and effective law enforcement. HB 1201 is a deterrent to baseless criminal investigations that border abuse of discretion. The new law will also codify best practices for law enforcement concerning voluntary consent searches, an area that presently provides for unfettered discretion. As a result, HB 1201 will strengthen the trust and relationships between Colorado communities and law enforcement by setting a respectful tone for police/civilian interactions where no grounds of criminality exist.

"The passage of this law is the result of lengthy negotiations and compromise with stakeholders from both our coalition and the law enforcement community. We would like to commend Rep. Middleton and Senator Steadman for their leadership on this effort; they knew to stand up when it counted the most. All of the sponsors including Speaker Carroll worked hard to achieve bipartisan support for this important legislation and big win for all Coloradans.

"Of course, this success would not have been possible without the dedication and tireless work of our coalition, members and supporters. This bill is a great step towards enshrining constitutional protections for everyone. "

Univision partners with the CLF to offer media training

Big thanks to Univision for hosting a media training seminar in March for Colorado Latino Forum members, who participated in the Candidate Development Training in February.

Mario M. Carrera, Vice-President/General Manager of Univision in Colorado, as well as Luisa Collins and Pedro Calderon Michel donated their time and office space to offer media training. The training consisted of a one on one taped interview with Luisa that members were given feedback on and were able to take a copy home. Luisa and Pedro talked about everything from the do’s and don’ts of working with the media to suggestions on appearances during interviews.

Some of their best advice to members was to be honest, and to build a good working relationship with the media. They also spoke to the importance of the Latino/a media market in Colorado and the opportunities that existed within that market.

The CLF hopes to continue working with Univision in the future to provide this valuable training to our members who are thinking about running for a public office.

3/1/10 - Informed Consent Bill Moves Forward

The Informed Consent Search Bill (HB 1201) passed the Colorado House Judiciary Committee on an 7-4 vote, and second reading in the House.  This is an endeavor that the Colorado Latino Forum is a partner on with the Colorado Progressive Coalition. In fact, many of our members provided testimony in support of the bill and thank Rep. Middleton and Sen. Steadman for leading the effort.  Now the bill moved on to the whole House.

The bill requires that an arrested person gives express consent before he/she can be searched. A consent search takes place when a law enforcement officer asks for permission to search a person or their vehicle when there is no reason for a search.  Consent searches are exceptions are to the probable cause requirement needed to search a person or person’s car.

“There is a lot of confusion around consent searches under current law. Often, individuals are unaware of their right to choose whether or not to allow a search.  In the worst cases, people don’t believe they are asked to consent and are searched anyway, are simply ignored by law enforcement, or treated badly when they do invoke their right to say no.  The intent of the bill is to provide consistency and transparency to consent search procedures,” Rep. Middleton said in a press release sent out by the House.

2/01/10 - CLF Candidate Development Training and Anniversary Event Great Success

The Colorado Latino Forum and the Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce were proud host the Campaign Development Training last weekend, which turned out to be a great success.

The purpose of the training was to prepare the next generation of Latinas and Latinos interested in running for public office or serving as campaign managers.

About 30 people from all over the state participated in the event. The CLF hopes to continue to offer this program for those who are interested in running for office, or becoming campaign managers. The program provided future candidates and civic leaders with the essentials of a campaigning.

After successfully completing the training, graduates celebrated with more than 150 other CLF members and supporters in light of our one year anniversary.

Special guests throughout the weekend included Congressman John Salazar, Senator Michael Bennet, former Denver Mayor Federico Pena, former Colorado Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff and Mario Solis Marich to name a few.

Keep a look out for upcoming training opportunities from the CLF!
